Your Say

Back to the "Your Say" contents pagePupils: What do you think about your school? Autumn 2018

The questions have changed this year in-line with the revised OFSTED pupil questionnaire. We sampled the new questionnaire before we sent it out and found the outcomes and reasons given by pupils were a little more diverse than typical. Even taking that into account, we were very pleased overall to note very high satisfaction levels in response to the statements.

We are also pleased to note the low number of pupils that answer “Never/None/Strongly Disagree/Nothing done about bullying” to statements (with the exception of question14) . Senior staff have spoken individually to any child (that included their name) that answered “Never/None/Strongly Disagree/Nothing done about bullying” to any of the statements (exception question 14) to explore understanding (especially regarding safety/worries) and any actions that need to be taken to resolve this.

The % results have been rounded to the nearest whole number so totals may not always add up to exactly 100. The results of this questionnaire (including pupil and parental comments and responses) and all other “Your Say” exercises are published on the school website. Thank you to the 294 Y1-4 pupils that completed and returned their questionnaire-we appreciate the feedback.

Parent Comments

· M is very happy at the school and has had a great transition from Year 2 to 3.  We are really grateful for the care and support the school provides.  Thank you!

· I can’t remember a day when L hasn’t wanted to come to school.  I know that she gets lots of praise, support and encouragement at school and this pushes her to want to do really well.  I visit a lot of schools as a supply teacher but think that MP has a bit of magic about it.  They do lots of little extra things that they do not need to do but it makes the children have a happy, memorable experience.  L’s teacher is excellent and I know that she will have a brilliant year!

· It has been a difficult time for our family since the summer, the fact that O is happy to come to school every morning shows what an amazing happy and safe school it is.

· School has been proactive in responding to our concerns and taking steps to resolve these.  I’m continually impressed by Headteacher’s commitment to the school and its pupils and his genuine interest in every child, seeming to know each one as an individual.  The school is well led and seems to work effectively to meet all children’s needs.

· We are so pleased N enjoys school.  we are very happy with MP it’s a fantastic school

· We have been very impressed at how well E has settled into MP as a new pupil into Yr 1.  The school supported this transition by making her feel very special and welcomed.  We have been extremely impressed by the schools organisation of extra activities such as the Harvest Assembly (considering the number of pupils involved!)  We are very pleased to have chosen MP as E’s school placement

· E is extremely happy at MP.  Her reading and writing is coming on a treat.  We are very pleased with her learning progress.  I would also highly recommend MP to a friend.  All of E’s teachers are terrific

· Performances, one Xmas production per class which lasts 15/20 mins would be much preferred by parents and children.  He nearly cried on the morning of the third performance and I could see why! So much effort from teachers and children is put in and appreciated.  But both children and parents would prefer it to be shorter, less children and mainly children to enjoy more.  I would suggest one show / set of songs for each class and parents are given one opportunity, two at the most to see it.  You could have a 9 am a 9.30 and a 10 am or 9, 9.20 and 9.40 quick turnaround for all and a lot more bearable for the children. Last year my child was sitting on the floor for an hour to sing one song then back to the side of the hall and unable to see anything.  Fine if it was once but 3 productions, plus school internal performance was far too much. (Response: We are sorry you feel this way and the suggestion provides a helpful alternative. Since no other pupils or parents have raised this directly with the school (in this consultation) there probably isn’t sufficient demand to change the current arrangements. We feel that most parents and pupils enjoy the format and we try to involve all of the pupils in all of the performance (singing and actions) whilst giving each class time on stage/stood up. We fully recognise that parents/carers want to be able to see their child and, whilst we try to ensure this happens, we understand that this can be tricky and quite fleeting. However, we also think parents/carers enjoy seeing their child as part of a larger performance and group and mostly enjoy the concerts even if they can’t see their child throughout. The suggestion made by the parent has similarities to the (already in place) class assembly that all Nursery-Y3 classes currently prepare in the spring term. Logistically, class assemblies need to be spread over a very long term timescale (almost the whole spring term); as such, it would not be possible to coordinate sufficient practice and performance time for all 17 classes to practice and perform Christmas concerts)

· Racism has been an issue however (teacher) had dealt with it appropriately.  I think it will be beneficial to pupils / teachers to talk about humans from around the world, cultures, religions in class / assembly and also that we are all one big human race with people who have different coloured skin, eyes etc.  All-inclusive education for pupils of all background needs to be promoted / highlighted.  For example, a child should not have to think they have ‘black’ skin when in fact they have brown skin.  Also they shouldn’t be made to feel their particular skin colour is a negative thing. (Response: We seek to  promote respect, inclusion and equality at all times. The school has processes in place to log, review and manage racist incidents. We understand how upsetting racist incidents can be and would always want to respond to any incident. Records of incidents are rare but if they happen we always investigate and respond in a sympathetic and proportionate way (informing parents/carers and making members of the governing body aware of number and types of incidents). Assemblies, PHSCE (including family groups) proactively and reactively promote respect, inclusion and equality and address racism and other types of prejudice. If any parent/carer or child wants more information on this, please do not hesitate to contact the school)
